Computer Servers

Amazon have provided some server hardware to the Community Association. Those technically savvy community members will know that amazon are providing vast amounts of internet cloud based storage to their customers and have upgraded their server systems. We have been donated the old kit, which is adequate for our purposes as a charity. We will be looking for some match funding to get hard drives for the servers, and look forward to commisioning them in the near future.

Fish & Chips

We have had some progress regarding the new Fish and Chip Shop. In an effort to provide more services to our community Merthyr Valley Homes are letting the end unit to a local businessman so that he can establish a Fish & Chip Shop in the Community Centre building.
We need to support it to keep it sustainable as its success will lead to more businesses in Trefechan.
This is due to happen in March sometime!

New Business Development Officer

Tony Wheeler has been offered a better post and has moved on. We wish him well and hope to see him back as a trustee in the next month or so.

We welcome Richard Brown as his replacement.
He will be finding his way around the Cafe and Community Centre, please help him get aquainted with Trefechan, because he is here to strengthen the business, and not just the cafe, but look at other sources of revenue that can make the Charity and Social Enterprise sustainable for the future.

The trustees are pleased to announce Tony Wheeler for the post of Business Manager.
Tony was selected by the trustees from three other excellent candidates, all capable, qualified and senstitive to working in a community such as ours. Our thanks to them all for considering us and we appreciate their interest in Trefechan.
Tony has 2 years to help us develop the cafe and community centre as a business that will serve the community for years to come.
HE cannot do it alone; WE will ALL have to support him and the Community Centre to make it best serve our Community at no cost to anyone outside of the community.
We have had our fair share of public funding and we cannot depend on our partners in the Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council or Merthyr Valleys Homes indefinately.

Social Enterprise Development Announcement

The Community Association has recently acquired funding for a new post, which is due to be advertised publically.
The post is based on the development of our cafe and other community centre resources as a viable social enterprise, which will further the mission of the Trefechan Community Association, working in partnership with MTCBC Community Enterprise Development Team, and Merthyr Valleys Homes toward a successful sustainable business delivering resources that are focussed on satisfying our community needs.
The post will require someone with the ability to develop the business to a sustainable level over the next two years.
The successful candidate will be responsible to the trustees of the association and be afforded direct control over the day to day business operations of the social enterprise.

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and its representatives welcome interested parties to express their views on which site the new Ysgol-y-Graig Primary School should be built, at a public consultation meeting which is taking place at Ysgol-y-Graig Primary School on Wednesday 23rd March 2011 at 4.00pm – 7.00pm.
The decision to rebuild Ysgol-y-Graig is a result of the Welsh Assembly Government identifying the need for educational investment under the 21st Century Schools programme. The Council has assessed their school surplus places, determined the asset management requirements based upon projected backlog maintenance, surveyed conditions of their educational establishments and developed strategies to improve educational outcomes.
On analysis of the assessments, the existing Ysgol-y-Graig Primary School has been identified as a school which is to be included in the first band of investment, with the earliest funding for construction being released by the Welsh Assembly Government in April 2012.
Various sites have been considered and they have been narrowed down to two possible locations. The aim of the public consultation is to capture and understand the views of all interested parties to aid the decision making process as to which of the two sites the new school will be built on. Representatives from the Council, Project Manager Mott MacDonald and Architectural Designer Austin-Smith:Lord will be on hand during the meeting to answer any questions that arise.

How many rugby pitches do we need in Cefn given that we have a new and pristine pitch with floodlights?

How many green spaces do we need dogs to defecate on and endanger the health of young people?
The playing fields are the best and safest option for a new primary/nursery school aside from access issue and the caveat to the access issue is the School Bus. This has to be sorted out by our community representatives.
There is a desperate need for a new, excellent school within our community for the future generations of Vaynor. We should not jeopardise this for the sake of those resistant to change and the idea that keeping the land will not prevent future housing projects. We can be sure that if this decision is financially or demographically justified then our youngsters will be going to school somewhere outside of this ward.
If we have the school in Cefn Coed then at least we will have a “green” playing area where our young people will be taught in a new, modern, clean and vibrant school close to home.
We should be empathetic to the fact that we live in an environmentally endowed area; prevaricating the need for a large village green space – soon to be filled with houses if we stop the school from occupying the area.
We are not situated in central London. In Cefn, the residents are a stone’s throw from Cyfartha Park (£2 Million funded recently) and the Rugby fraternity (Flood lights, Renovations – roof showers & pitch).
We live next to a national park, rivers, woods, and mountains, all second to none. When we consider deficiencies in our environment it should be those of our young peoples’ educational environment and development.
Let us focus our attention to the investment in the education of the young people in Vaynor.
It is amazing to realise how effectively our Ysgol y Graig Head Teachers and Mrs Avril Diplock, MBE (Trefechan Nursery) have managed to keep such high educational standards given their remit.

Speed Signs

On Saturday night 19th Feb vandals burned the Speed Indicator sign on the bottom entrance to the village. The cost of this sign is £2500 without the additional labour.

It has taken the community and its partnership over 6 years to get any kind of speed restriction for the main road through our village.

This crime may not seem anything, other than mindless vandalism, but it will be a tragedy if a child or any resident is injured or killed by a speeding vehicle when crossing this road whilst the sign is out of service.

Cinema Club

The under 11's who attend our weekly Cinema Club went downt ot the VUE cinema to enjoy a film courtesy of the association.
The youngsters were ferried via minibus, and brought home via the Cafe where they were fed with a meal and soft drinks.

Trefechan Village Green Cafe re-decorated

Thanks to the donation of paint from Merthyr Valleys Homes the Cafe and Conference Room have been spruced up.

The kitchen and cafe area were both in "real" need of refreshing and Brian, Simon & Ceri did a great job of re-decorating with Cathy, Hayley, Leanne & Rachel doing the hard graft of peparing the surfaces. Rose of course leading by example, and orchestrating the operation.

The Trustees were well pleased with the result and appreciative of the paint donation from Merthyr Valleys Homes.

The pictures frames on the wall were purchased from grant money from the Merthyr Tydfil Development fund who also part fund Joe's Post.

Remembrance Sunday 14th November 2010

The 2nd Sunday in November is always the Sunday of Remembrance.

Sunday 14th is that day this year. As usual, the Cenotaph will be attended by the young people of Ysgol-y-Graig on the Friday before.
On Remembrance Sunday a memorial service will be held at 11:00hrs in front of the Cenotaph followed by a chapel service at Hen-dy-Cwrdd.
Major T Price MBE is the parade organiser.
Colin Lloyd, a staunch supporter of the local branches of SSAFA and the RBL passed away recently and will be sadly missed as he was always there to secure the wreaths to the Cenotaph at the end of the parade.

Trefechan Nursery Walkodiles

Trefechan Nursery Schoolchildren and Staff are now looking forward to the first of many adventures with their new Walkodile units.

Walkodiles are comprised of high visibility, adjustable harnesses connected to the flexible spine via a secure two way clip located on the harness; that enable children between the ages of 3 and 7 to walk together in secure and safe groups of six children.

The Trefechan Community Association acquired the units from the supplier with a view to using them with the after school club, but realised that they would benefit the Trefechan Nursery and Ysgol y Graig who would get better use out of the Walkodiles.

David Walsh who led on this project said:

“It was delightful to witness the excitement of the children who can look forward to many hours of fun where the staff would have a stress free way of enjoying healthy and educational excursions exploring all the sights the local environment has to offer”

The Association sees the introduction of these innovative and most importantly safe; walking resources for our children as not only strengthening the link between Teacher and Children but the link between the Trefechan Community Association, our Nursery School and Ysgol y Graig.

Grass Cutting Service

The grass cutting service has been welcomed by many residents and the team are working hard trying to keep up with demand.

If you are elderly or infirm then please phone the Trefechan Community Centre Cafe and ask for our garden maintenance team. This service is free, if you can afford to donate something toward the cost of petrol that would be appreciated.

The team is comprised of three Future Job Fund employees of the Trefechan Community Association.

Kristian Burton - (Future Jobs Fund Scheme)

Kristian left our employment yesterday. He joined us six months ago as part of the Future Jobs Fund scheme. The scheme is designed to pay young people and place them with organisations like the Community Association to gain work experience and undergo training and mentoring.

We are very happy that Kristian, has left us to go in to full time employment. Part of his training was to gain Fork Lift truck licenses which we know helped him. There is also no doubt that his work experience in our community will also serve him well.

He will be missed as he was extremely hard working and well liked by the Staff and Trustees of the Association.

The Computers have been made more accessible, especially to our Younger customers
The public computers in the Cafe are being fully utilised and the trustees were concerned that our younger "breakfast club" users were finding it difficult to use the PCs situated on the Breakfast bar.
Joe & Kristian dropped the worktop to table level and Stephen reconfigured the PCs and cabling over the weekend, ahead of the school holidays.
Please note that these computers are for public use and you need to log your visits in the usage book.

This helps us prove that they are being fully utilised and give us justification for their replacement and upkeep when applying for funding.

Elvira Thomas

Sadly Elvira has passed away last weekend. She was a staunch Community member of Trefechan and its Partnership board.
She will be greatly missed by our Association and all residents in Trefechan.
Our sympathy to her family, especially her daughter Alyson.

Her funeral is taking place from the Tabernacle Chapel, Brecon Road at 1:15pm November 23rd.

The Association has been assisted by the Community Food Co-operative Programme and the Rural development team in MTCBC.

The RDP funded project is to be launched on November 13th when the Mayor will be visiting us to formerly open the event.

David has a wealth of experience in working within communities like ours as he previously worked for the Gellideg Foundation involved in similar projects.

Trefechan Community Café and Shop Facility – Food Network Coordinator

Hours: 18 per week Salary: £9.3k per annum

Brief:

The post of Food Network Coordinator is a new post that will further enhance the Trefechan Café Project. The village has no shop and the coordinator will develop links with local food suppliers and farmers to establish a local food outlet.

The long term objective is to establish a shop in the Community Building that will sell a broad range of locally sourced food products and provide a much needed service to the local community.

Qualities:

Self motivated, organised and dependable.
Good communication skills are essential.
The ability to demonstrate Microsoft Office Excel and Word proficiency at interview.
Experience in the food industry either retail or marketing.

Responsibilities:

Actively participate in the weekly food distribution from the food co-op.
Develop and implement outreach services, building a membership of food producers, suppliers and service users.
Supervise the Café workers and ensure that their time sheets and the Café accounts are monitored.
Produce monthly reports to the Trustees/Directors and maintain regular contact with the Secretary and treasurer.
The project will be closely monitored by the Local Authority and you will also be working with the Rural Action Merthyr Programme Co-ordinator.

Computer Club

We are looking at new ways of introducing community members to computers and the internet. If you live in Vaynor Ward and are interested in participating then please turn up on any Tuesday evening between 6pm and 8pm.
This is a club for adults who wish to learn but do not want the commitment to formal training and tests.

Cefn Coed Community Centre - Vanadalism

THERE are fears over the future of a community centre used by hundreds of people each week.
Vandals smashed eight glass door panels at Cefn Coed Community Centre, at around 9.30pm on Saturday, February 14, causing £2,000 of damage.
And it is the second time in four months the building has been attacked after two windows were shattered in October.
A neighbour raised the alarm last weekend when they saw three people running away from the centre after hearing a loud noise outside.
Chair of the centre’s trustees, Doug Tavener, worries people could be turned away from using the facility which currently caters for nursery groups and tae kwon do clubs among others.
“I’m not pointing fingers in any direction,” he said.
“We only know it was three people. They broke armoured glass so they’ve got to be pretty strong.
“This vandalism threatens the closure of the centre which is run by volunteers.
“It places everything at risk because people lose confidence if they see things like this happening. Staff won’t be happy if they feel they are not protected.”
The centre is used seven days a week and has more than 800 visits every seven days with more than 20 full and part-time staff. It is almost fully self sufficient but does have help from Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.

Computer Classes are held on a Tuesday evening between 6 and 8pm.
These are informal classes facilitated by the Community Association and are also supplemented by Community Education with a trainer for anyone who requires more formal accredited training.

Trefechan Community Association Progress

It has been a long time since our last news post. The last two months have been devoted to working with the Local Authority and the European Funding Team in an effort to get the funding agreed in June of this year delivered to the Association to progress the Cafe project.

The funding has been approved subject to the scrutinisation of the last modified business projection (modified due to slippage as the project had to be started in June and finished by 2011).

Whilst everyone in the local authority and WEFO are sympathetic to our issue, we have lost one of our pilot Cafe workers due to this intransigence and are finding it difficult to continue the service and development without the financial assistance promised 4 months ago.

The prospect looks good at the moment and there is the promise of 2 new jobs being created:

The After School Club continues: as a result of the recent grant that provides continuance of the Cafe Project, the trustees decided to take the risk and use the charities reserves to support the play workers until such time that other sources of revenue funding can be sourced.

Cafe Funded for the Next 3 Years

As a result of the successful bid to the Rural Key Fund the Cafe will continue to operate for the next 3 years. During this time the cafe will develop in to a source for "local food produce" and open longer hours; resulting in the employment of more staff.
This will not happen overnight; but with the communities support it will succeed. Profit will be fed back in to the cafe until its potential is fully realised and then the profits will assist in supporting the charitable aims of the community association in the delivery of cheap and free resources to the community.

Cafe Workers Update

The Association has unsuccessful in securing funding for the contiuation of the cafe workers posts. Regretably the Association will have to let both Michelle & Gail go on to find gainful employment elsewhere.

This has happened because the Cafe is currently unable to sustain both the wages and costs, this in spite of the help of the MTIB and the successful ESRF bid last year. It was understood that this was going to be a difficult task, but we believe that Trefechan needs a resource like this.

It is hoped that we can keep the Cafe open with Joe and Rachel, but the service will be curtailed.

In the meantime we can only wish Gail & Michelle the very best in finding a job.

Rachel Yemm Passes her Driving Theory Test

Rachel, our administrative assistant passed her driving theory test today.
This is another significant achievement for Rachel in her work within our community centre. She has made a real difference to our project by her hard work and effort, as demonstrated by her acceptance to train for every new challenge she has faced. Everyone involved in the Trefechan Community Association, Communities First Team, and especially Tydfil Training - who have supported our organisation take great pleasure in congratulating her.

BIFFA Funding

In spite of the freeze on the release of BIFFA monies awarded to our councillors for the benefit of the communities in the Vaynor ward the Cefn Community Centre has managed to buck the system and have been awarded money from the fund.
This in spite of the struggle for funding to keep our After School Playgroup and our workers who now keep it going by volunteering. The Association match funded by providing free accomodaion as a result of room rental income from paying groups.
So:
Looks like more of the same - Cefn Councillors - Cefn gets preferential treatment.
Look like a painful 4 years ahead for the rest of us!

Cafe Workers Funding Bid

The Association with the assistance of the C1st Team and Rural Key Fund Team in the Local Authority, have submitted a bid for the Cafe to be staffed by 2 Cafe workers.
It is hoped that over the next 3 years the Cafe will form the trading arm of the Charity and deliver more than just hot food and buffets; but sell local produce such as milk, bread, fruit & vegetables. This funding is by no means guaranteed and we are striving to source it from other funding agencies.

The Future of the Community Centre

The Future of the Community Centre

The Community Centre is going to be transferred from the MTCBC to Merthyr Valley Housing by the end of the year. This does create a little uncertainty about the future of the project as there are issues relating to land and conveyance which will be complex. The association is committed to ensuring that we pursue our agenda and our objectives.
